Science Afternoon Tea

Closest Underground Station: South Kensington

Price: £32.50 pp

I was musing on my 24th birthday recently, and remembered the time that my friend Patch Adams took me out for afternoon tea at the Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington.

Afternoon tea has experienced a major renaissance over the past couple of years and is no longer an activity reserved for grannies and posh people. That said, to me it always feels like quite a treat and a very classy way to spend an afternoon with a friend or two.

The Ampersand Hotel offers a range of afternoon tea options, but the most exciting had to be the ‘Science Afternoon Tea’. The three tiered stand came out in the usual fashion –

Level one: cucumber, cream cheese and salmon, cheese and pickle and goats cheese and apple sandwiches (we’d requested a veggie/pescetarian range).

Level two: plain and white chocolate scones with clotted cream and jam.

Level three:  a selection of cakes, macaroons and other scientific themed paraphernalia.

The pièce de résistance had to be the dry ice bubbling from the science themed cakes and beakers on the top level of the stand! The hostess knew that we were unable to eat before taking Instagram photos and was very happy to oblige. My favourite item on the stand was the pipette filled with ‘blood’ which you could squirt into your mouth to accompany the macaroon! The dinosaur, volcano and Saturn cakes were also absolutely adorable and I really appreciated the nod to the nearby  Natural History Museum and Science Museum.

As it was my birthday, we were offered a mocktail each as part of the meal and they were also kind enough to surprise me with a separate ‘birthday cake’ with candle!

The themed tea costs £32.50 per person, which is actually quite reasonable compared to the other themed afternoon teas you can have in London. I felt that this theme was more than just a novelty, as real care and attention was given to each item on the menu. I was also very impressed by the service, as we were made to feel very welcome and comfortable, and any dietary requirements were catered to without fuss or error.

In short, afternoon tea at the Ampersand Hotel is the perfect way to relax in good company and you’re sure to leave satisfied (and full!).

Disclaimer – The Science Afternoon tea comes in seasons, and is then replaced with another themed tea, such as ‘Musicals’ or ‘Chelsea Flower Show’. The current season only lasts until 7th February 2016,  after which time you will have to keep your eyes peeled for its return. Considering the quality of the service and food we experienced, I would certainly recommend any afternoon tea service from this venue.
